Frozen Yogurt
It is hard to ignore the growing concern around diets and healthy lifestyles. While many customers are focusing on making healthy choices in their diets, they still have not lost their sweet tooth. Now more than ever before the food and beverage industry is under more pressure to produce healthier, reduced calorie and sugar options to meet the needs and demands of customers. The food industry is faced with the challenge of offering more ‘better for you’ foods that fit in with the growing health conscious markets. With all these factors influencing the market, the opportunity is open for a natural, zero calorie sweetener – introducing Stevia, the natural sweet solution for a healthier lifestyle. Although the use of stevia is zero calorie and a plant based product, stevia leaves can be 200-350 times sweeter than normal sugar. 25% of the calories found in a glass of soda can be replaced with stevia leaves and still offer the same sweet taste, without the guilt and fury feeling normal carbonated sugars leave on teeth.

Stevia is a natural origin plant-based ingredient and stevia leaves contain natural sweet compounds called steviol glycosides that give the plant its sweet taste. These sweet compounds are released by stepping stevia leaves in water or tea. The extract is then filtered and purified to remove the non-sweet matter and then concentrated into a powdered form; provide a powdered sweetener to be used in food and beverages. For years Stevia has been used as a table top sweetener in the Asian market, however until recently was still relatively unknown in many countries. After undergoing many studies on safety and metabolism and regulations, Stevia extract was concluded safe for human consumption by the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives in 2008.

Since the safe approval of Stevia, the amount of products launched using it as a new sweetener increased significantly. The number has jumped from 276 in 2008 to 1087 in 2012 according to Food and Beverage Asia. The global recognition of stevia as a commercially natural, zero calorie sweet ingredient is rapidly growing. There is a large amount of benefits brewing from using stevia as a sweetener instead of sugar for businesses’. Given the current health trends and demands for low-calorie, healthier options the opportunity of growth for stevia grows. Currently it is being used as a safe, natural sweetening option to reduce calories in food and beverages, appealing to those customers who are watching their calorie and sugar intake. The approval of stevia by regulatory authorities has generated widespread consumer interest.
